In the digital world of work, we often miss the small physical cues that show we are present and paying attention. Messages remain unanswered, eye contact is lost, gestures and facial expressions are missing - this can create uncertainty. At the same time, we all have a need to be seen and heard and to communicate clearly.
Have you ever noticed – in yourself or others – that we speak louder when we feel we are not being heard?
Successful digital communication today depends on how clearly we convey messages, how attentively we read the signals of others, and how thoughtfully we use digital tools.
Three key factors support this:
1. Make values visible
Because digital channels provide fewer direct feedback signals, it is important to actively demonstrate engagement. This includes responding to messages promptly, actively participating in virtual meetings, or sharing information through shared tools such as calendars or project management software. This way, we signal presence and attention – and strengthen the connection, even when we are not in the same location.
2. Communicate carefully
Digital messages contain fewer emotional cues, so content can easily be misunderstood. When we choose our words consciously, shape the tone mindfully, and use small signals such as emojis or exclamation marks when needed, we promote mutual understanding and appreciation. This ensures that our messages arrive clearly, friendly, and respectfully.
3. Collaborate confidently
Virtual teams offer less spontaneous face-to-face interaction. To strengthen trust and collaboration, it is worth proactively sharing information, using respectful and connecting language, and openly asking for support or clarification. In this way, we promote trust, cooperation, and a sense of belonging – even without physical presence.
Digital communication is today more than just the exchange of information.
It is a tool for promoting understanding, trust, and cooperation – while at the same time making appreciation, human closeness, and mindfulness visible. In hybrid work environments, where facial expressions and gestures are only perceived to a limited extent, uncertainty can easily arise. Through conscious, appreciative digital communication, we can precisely enable this experience and promote a culture in which everyone feels secure, heard, and included.
